One month from today, I will be moving into my dorm at USC! I found out my suitemate today and both girls seems awesome! Not the scary worst nightmares I had been worrying about!! Yay! I did some more dorm shopping, including my computer! Apple has this great deal if you show a student ID you get $50-$100 off a computer, a free (after rebate) iPod touch, and a free (after rebate) printer! I am so so so excited! Its getting closer!! I can't believe it!
On another note, I'm going to rush in the fall. I'm super excited and there are so many sorority choices at USC that its crazy. They have the most ridiculous houses for sororities and fraternities. They are unbelievable. I've heard a lot about which ones to join (and not to join) and I think I have some ideas, but does anyone have advice? Its very early, but I'd rather go into the whole thing with a plan and know a little about it before it gets crazy. Believe it or not it begins the first day of school!
I can't believe its only 1 month away. Let the real countdown begin!

Katie - do you have sorority alums writing recommendations for you? At Tennessee it is very important to have recs. A rec will at least get you asked back one time. Many times without a rec you will be cut early. USC may be different, but I just wanted to give you heads up. What sororities are really good at USC? xoxo
You'll have lots of people tell you join this one, I'm a (insert house name here) and it's the BEST!!! But honestly, you can't really go by people's recommendations because houses vary from campus to campus and even then, the dynamics within a house change every few years as girls come and go. Also, of course everyone is going to suggest their own house.
The best thing to do is to go through recruitment and try to ignore the whole "this is the cool house and this one isn't" thing based on what you've heard, and really get to know the girls so that you know where YOU fit in. I'm an ADPi (once you're Greek, you're Greek for the rest of your life!) and while yeah, we were the biggest house on campus at the time, I joined more because I loved the history (First and Finest! LOL!) and the group of girls that I accepted as my sisters, not because of the house size or reputation. Go into Rush with an open mind and you'll do great.
When I went to school, I knew I wanted to rush but I had absolutely no idea which ones were the good ones and which were the not so good. I think in the long run, that worked to my advantage because I got to decide completely on my own. I ended up choosing very well I must say! Also, do you know if your recruitment has a dress code? Ours did not, but I've heard a lot do so you might want to check into that. You have great style, so I don't think you have a thing to worry about though; any house will be lucky to have you!! You'll have to keep us all updated on blog world about rushing, it really was such fun!

You should definitely rush!! It was the best decision I ever made, but make sure to keep an open mind and choose the girls you feel most comfortable with! I'm a Theta - if you'd like a rec letter let me know!! :)

I know that some people might disagree with this statement, but go through rush with an absolutely open mind. I went through rush twice and when I went through it the second time, it was so much easier. Not only because I had been through the routine once before, but I was also more comfortable being myself at each house, instead of trying to play into their stereotype. Try not to get caught up in the rumors that fly around from girl to girl or the pictures that are posted on the chapter's website. Most rumors are extremely outdated and some are just rediculous. I promise you that it might be hard at the time, but the more honest you are with yourself and with the girls at each house, the better your chances are of finding the right house for you! My school doesn't have sororities so I can't help ya out. I have heard that it's a very important decision to make sure you get in the right one...so good luck!!!
That is so exciting and you should def rush...seriously one of the best decisions I've ever made! Coming from the east coast where going greek isn't that big I knew NOTHING about the greek system before so I would say that my advice would go in with a completely open mind. The sororities I thought I wanted to join ended up being one's I didn't like very much and the chapter I didn't know much about ended up being the one that I joined! I didn't have any rec letters going in and don't really know that much about them but if they make a big difference let me know and I would be more then happy to write you one! You are absolutely going to LOVE college, especially an amazing school like USC! Rush is definitely a unique experience that you will never forget. There's a saying: "No matter the Letter, Greeks do it better!" which is very true :] keep an open mind during recruitment. You will know which Chapter is right for you when you find it! Definitely blog about your experience!
I definitely agree with all the comments to keep an open mind. Just be yourself and you'll end up in the right place. You'll meet lifelong friends and have great networking as an adult no matter which sorority you join.
One thing to consider is spring rush if that's an option at USC. It gives you a little more time to get acclimated to college life. Pledging can be really busy so it can be good to get a headstart on your grades before jumping in with both feet.

I love dorm shopping. I'm going to be an RA at Tennessee this go round and I have decided I need to have a 'cool' room. My mom is having a field day. She actually brought home the perfect rug for my room today - from Wal-Mart of all places.
I too am in a service sorority - Gracie Beth and I are actually sorority sisters! - and I love it dearly. Keep an open mine when you go into rush. Ignore all the tent talk - who's the best, who you don't want to be associated with. You'll make the best decision that way!
Oh, good luck!!!! You'll have a great time. Definitely keep an open mind but don't be afraid to follow your heart and your gut either. You know yourself best, and you need to be where you feel you belong. I was able to narrow it down to 3 pretty much before the whole thing started, and I was right. Those ended up being my final 3. Be yourself, be friendly, be as relaxed as you can be. Try to scope out the chapters as much as you can beforehand because one National can really vary from campus to campus. Definitely get alums to write you recs...at many schools they are an absolute requirement. I wish you a wonderful rush and pledge experience and hope that wherever you find your home is still as much a part of your life 20 years later as Chi Omega is of mine.

My friends who did rush recommended spring instead of fall (not sure that is an option at USC though)
It is really important to just go with YOUR heart in recruitment. If you do, you'll make the right decision. :) I have known awesome girls that joined great sororities (usually ones they were legacies of) but hated it because it wasn't "the one" for her.
I know you'll love it. Don't worry and enjoy every minute of it! Believe me when I say that that girls doing the recruitment are just as excited and nervous! :)
