The Art of the Sock Bun

I FINALLY DID IT!

Note, not to my own hair, but I did this to my hair model Hannah's hair! I LOOOOOVE the way that it turned out!

I've been trying and trying and trying to master the sock bun. I actually saw something on Pinterest about the sock bun being created from a legitimate sock...well I'll just spoil that plot now, IT DOESN'T WORK. You need this:

We snagged our sock bun donut at a Sally Beauty Supply store for less than $4!

In order to do a sock bun, you:
1. Put your hair in a pony tail. Use a regular elastic to secure the pony on your head.
2. Pull the pony straight back (or up) depending on where you want your sock bun to be.
3. Take the donut and place it at the ends.
4. SLOWLY roll the ends INTO your pony, wrapping hair into the donut as you go down your hair.
5. There will be loose ends at the base, wrap those around the pony and mush them into the bun (such official terms...I know...)
6. Spray a little hair spray once you're in place and you'll have all the staying power you need!

Recommendations:
1. HAVE SOMEONE ELSE DO THIS. Your arms get tired and it would be tough to have to do it on your own.
2. Your hair will work better when it's straight--i.e. I tried it on my curly haired friend Colleen too, and it was TOO voluminous once it was in the bun. We could definitely do it, but it was easier with straight hair.

I got tons of great response when I posted this photo on Instagram, so I'd love to hear everyone's experiences doing it! Could you do it alone? Any good tips?

xxKatie

I used to ride horses competitively and we always used the donut thing for our hair! I wish I still had mine!

I agree that the sock doesn't work...I tried it and my hair was a hot mess. Thanks for posting this!

Looks great! I've been enjoying sock buns lately. Lilly Davenport from It's Official blog showed a great tutorial as well :)

I use a sock and I do it myself (after much practice) but I wet my hair just a little before rolling and sleep in the bun. When I remove it in the morning the curls are beautiful. Such an easy way to style long hair.

This is awesome. I have seen so many tutorials on YouTube, using an actual sock. I tried & tried but to no avail! I still can't do a sock bun! I'll have to get one of these and try it out!

I've never used the doughnut thing, i use a sock. i used a pair of old CLEAN ankle socks and it works great for my hair. I have shoulder length curly thick hair and i put bobby pins in underneath the hair to make sure it stays. i can usually wear it to bed and wake up and my hair is still lookin great!

I do mine with an actual sock (well, actually, I used the leg of a pair of black pantyhose with runs) and it works just fine (and was free)! Rather than rolling it, I put the sock at the base of my pony, split it at the middle and finger-comb it evenly on all sides so it sort of cascades across the donut, then "swirl" the ends around the bun, twisting them and tucking them under the bun, and secure them with a second hair tie. It's faster and easier :)

Just came across this and for your curly haired friend, try putting it in a high pony, then teasing all of the pony tail. Then gently wrap in a circle around the pony tail and Bobby pin in place. :) works better than a sock bun for curly haired ladies :)

Hi! I would like to open beauty salon. Does anybody have an experience in this business? There are too many options in different salon equipment. Could anybody give me an advise? What store is more reliable to buy Portable esthetician table and Cosmetology tools. I'm choosing between Advance-Esthetic and Spa&Equipment websites.
