Growing Up

First it was going to high school.
Then, it was going to college.
Then, it was moving to your first apartment.
Now, moving to a house? (for the record, my house looks nothing like the Barbie Malibu Beach Club House...)

Yes, y'all, I'm moving to my own, real, free-standing house with two roommates. Let me tell you, moving is NOT easy! I have an entirely new appreciation for the hard work my parents have done for each of our big moves!

Logistically, packing is difficult--you have to be able to see where things need to go while thinking about how heavy boxes are, but still packing everything that you need safely and securely. THEN you get to the car part. Where Little, my Honda Civic, gets stuffed with clothes, bedding, shoes, furniture, and anything else that you can imagine accumulates in a college girl's room across the span of two years. I tweeted this picture yesterday of a bunch of the clothes in my car all stacked:
See all those nicely stacked hangers? Inevitably, moving becomes a kind of "Barrel of Monkeys" game where one hanger gets another one, and well...you know where I'm headed.

I made a few trips back and forth between houses yesterday and will finish packing, moving, and cleaning tomorrow through tomorrow night.

Here's to the HOME (get it?!) stretch!

SWISH!

Back at my alma mater, there's a big school-wide basketball tournament that's a huge event called "Hoop Madness"! It started my senior year and has been going very strong ever since. This year, a team of "Prepsters" took the courts in light pink, popped collars, pearl necklaces, side ponys and argyle knee socks!

On the back of every shirt, the team put their entire names, for instance if I were part of the team, I would have been "Catherine Anne Rudder"! All the team members got into it!

I LOVED this team idea the minute my Mom told me about it and I couldn't wait to see the photos! I even got to see a few more from facebook. A million years ago when I played in the same tournament, my team name was "The Scrubs" and we got numbers screen-printed on the back of our shirts--I wasn't kidding, people take it seriously!

From one prep to another, I'm so proud of this team!

Goodbye My Lover, Goodbye My Friend

As I begin to sing the beginning of James Blunt's song, "Goodbye My Lover" it has become a time to say goodbye to a dear friend of mine.

If y'all will remember, a few weeks ago I wrote Boo Boo about an accident I had on campus. Unfortunately I wrecked a pair of shoes in the process:
(Taken yesterday, rest in peace my friends)

It has come HIGH time that I dispose of these Platinum Jacks, but it is not easy let me tell you. I wrote this essay for Jack Rogers blog a few months back but I'm going to repost it for y'all to read:

What item takes you from your first “real” job, to two high school proms to graduation ceremonies to college orientation and move in? Maybe a camera, lucky key chain, or maybe even your parents. For me it was a beloved pair of shoes.

It all started with my first job working in high school. In Annapolis, Maryland, Jack Rogers are a shoe-must, so I fell in line. I decided among the colors at our store, gold, bone and white, silver and then I knew what I wanted: my “Platinum Jacks” as they’ve fondly been nicknamed. Using one of the first “big-girl” paychecks that I ever got, I happily purchased my first pair of Jack Rogers, a pristine Platinum pair, size 9.5 had Katie written all over them. At the time I was a rising junior in high school.  I tried to break them in, wondering how some women wore these shoes 24/7 in the summer. I later developed my seasonal 3-circle blister synonymous with spring, flowers, and Jack season.
In the spring of junior year, there is one event at my high school that every girl looks forward to and every boy looks away from: the prom. I had my dress picked out from August. Pink and green with swirls and a sweetheart halter neckline, with a goldy-silvery connector. I had a slight problem, with the mixed metal ring, what shoes did I wear? Prom-blem solved with my trusty platinum Jacks. I wore them to my senior prom and after prom as well, because lucky for 6’1’’ me, my Jacks didn’t make me tower over my date.

After senior year, about a month after graduation I headed down to Columbia, SC for only the second time in my life for college orientation at the University of South Carolina. I brought numerous outfit options but only 1 pair of shoes because with all my clothes, I was a little strapped for room. What did I bring with me knowing they’d match whatever I wore? My platinum Jacks, naturally. By this time, my collection consisted of black, gold and platinum but why fix what’s not broken, right?

Fast-forward to August 2009. Our big, blue Honda Pilot is packed to the brim with brand new bedding, desk supplies, all the clothes I could fit, lights, bed lifters, a laundry basket (and ample amounts of detergent), and my little family. We were all in comfy clothes necessary for lugging all my boxes and loads of stuff up 14 (yes, 14) flights of stairs to my new residence hall room. Brimming with excitement and nerves, my dear old dad moved most of the stuff. I had a Gamecocks t-shirt, white shorts and my platinum Jacks each and every trip up the stairs on my first day.
(My freshman year roommate and I at our FIRST game!!)

When you go to an SEC school, college Gameday is more of a holiday than anything else. Girls dress up, for us it’s all about the LBD. We all don our little black dresses, big sunglasses, and either Jack Rogers or cowboy boots. Welcome to the South y’all!  I’ll remember my first gameday. USC was playing Florida Atlantic University and I wore my first black dress to a game. My dad thought this was ridiculous. My roommate and I were so excited and copiously considered our footwear choices: comfort, could get a little dirty, style, and obviously it would have to match. She went with flip flops, but I knew only one pair of shoes could get me to my first big college football game. My Jacks, now about three years old, were perfectly worn in, plus it was early September so I was still totally used to wearing them from living in them over the summer. My Jacks made it through the entire season, although not bringing the Gamecocks as much luck as we would have hoped. My platinum Jacks also made it to the USC-Alabama game of 2010, that’s when they were lucky! Ask any USC student about that game and we can talk your ear off about how great it was and how it helped with the decision of the number one recruit but really, my student body owes it to my fabulous platinum Jacks that got us that W.

It’s clear that my shoe of choice for the past 5 years has been my platinum Jacks. Through the years, my friends have acquired their own pairs, I’ve accrued 2 more pairs: white and silver to add to my collection. I now have 5 pairs that work a decent rotation, but it’s my platinum ones that have made it to most of the important events of my college life. They got me through high school milestones and I look forward to see where they’re going to take me with the rest of college. If these shoes could talk…

Does That Make Scents?

I used to not really care about perfume. In like 8th grade, "my scent" (along with probably every other middle schooler out there...) was Ralph Lauren: Cool. Anyone else out there with me?
In doing some research for this post, I think I've come to the conclusion that it's been discontinued (I'm taking motions to dispute this claim though...) and RL isn't making it anymore. I'm slightly disappointed, but I'm also happy that no more middle school girls can bathe in this any longer. I think every girl I knew wore RLC and we all thought it was "ours" and we wore it first. I think it was always "pricey" at like $38 or something along those lines. I'm sure this was some sort of gift that I got for Christmas or a birthday!

My own preferences have changed quite a bit since then and I consider "my scent" now to be Flowerbomb by Viktor and Rolf:
I just LOVE this perfume! I've worn in consistently since spring break of senior year in high school until now. My mom's not a huge fan of it since it is on the strong side, and I think it's a bit heavy for the summer myself. (Read: I also don't have much left so I'm trying to conserve a bit.) Instead, I wear "Beachy" by Lilly Pulitzer for the summer months:
This is a lot lighter and much more appropriate for the summer! I also just adore the bottle and top that comes with it! I also have "Wink" and still have the fabulous printed ribbons that originally came with the swanky bottles.
I also really like Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Now Mist from a few summers ago. I have a HUGE bottle of it just like this one and I swear it replicates because I use it pretty often. It's nice because it's got a great smell but doesn't last long so it's ideal for freshening up or wearing something light to work.

What are your scents? Anything you consider to be "yours"? Let me know, and leave some suggestions for me to try this summer please and thank you!

Weekly Gratitude

It's been one heckova week in my life. Major up's and down, and I have a lot to be thankful for.
1. I am thankful for all of my friends. We were all reunited in a big event this week and it was great to see the high turnout. High school guys and gals I'm really proud of the class of '09, showing up in big numbers and with a lot of pride. Rally, and rally we will.
2. I am thankful for the lady at the Clinique counter at Macy's for being so efficient with helping me in my major foundation confusion. I've never been a face makeup girl, but in a pinch needed some for Monday. She was so helpful and kind and understood exactly what I was looking for. A great shopping experience indeed!
3. I am thankful for meaningful work that I enjoy. I have a great job that I love with people that rule. Does it get better than that?
4. I am thankful for a new Sally Hansen nail polis color that I bought over the weekend. It's exactly the same as OPI's Strawberry Marg for about 1/4 of the price...yes that's $1.99 a bottle!
5.  I am thankful for all of the small moments I get to spend with my parents. Just the past few nights my dad and I have watched some TV shows together and it's times like these I have to learn not to take for granted.
6. I am thankful for the Econ take home test we get tonight. I'll be able to take it at my own pace on my day off on Saturday which will be nice. In the meantime, I had another test yesterday in my second class! Eight weeks is sure to fly by at this pace...
7. I am thankful that gas at the beach was $0.20 cheaper per gallon than gas at home. This girl is ridin' dirty (any Chamillionaire fans out there? Throwback tunes party of 1.) with a full tank.
8. I am thankful that my new facecare routine is starting to show signs of changed. Sistagirl here has been super broken out (and since diagnosed with "adult acne"...gulp.) and I'm finally seeing some facial progress!
9. I am thankful to get the chance to start my new book! LOVING all the South Carolina bits!
10. I am thankful for 2 friends who have a ONE YEAR anniversary coming up SO soon! I like to think of myself as a 3rd member of that relationship. Man, this is the week of anniversaries! I LOVE it!So happy for y'all...xoxo

Prom x 3

So this is the 3rd prom I've ever been a part of: MY junior year in '08, MY senior year in '09, and now MY SISTER'S this year! I can't believe she's already going to prom! She looked absolutely beautiful and grown up in this Lilly dress:
Yet another formal Lilly dress for the family! (This one was better than the one I wore...and the right length...cough cough Katie...)
Anyway, she looked awesome and better than I did at any of my proms (not fishing or a sob story, just a faaaahbulous fact about her prom!). I had tried to get home in time so I could get to her prom and my schedule worked out JUST SO that I could get back in time! My training and work situation worked literally seamlessly so I could get back just in the nick of time!!
This was the great group! 3 guy friends all went with my sister and her 2 girl friends! What a fun night for all 6 of them!
This was my sister and her date! Under her dress she had gold Jacks on just like her big sis. Looks like I might have started a trend (our neighbor wore a long Lilly to prom with Jacks too...#trendsetter #ifidosaysomyself)
Of course we had to take a sisters picture. She looks like a model! Might be submitting this to the Lilly facebook page soon...I had just come from work so I was all Lilly-ed out as well!
This was at my junior prom...yikes! Oh the memories...

Has anyone else had prom yet? Did you wear Lilly? What is your DREAM dress?

Severn Skirt: Reverse Buyer's Remorse

For anyone who knows me personally, I'm not talking about THIS Severn skirt:
We had really ugly uniform skirts at my high school. I tried getting a photo of the navy blue, gold, maroon assembly dress combo that we had to wear, but no such luck. Apparently even the internet didn't want to see it, either!

This J. Crew Severn skirt seems to be sold out everywhere and I TOTALLY missed the boat! A skirt (maybe) named for my high school/they have the same name, and I totally missed it! I'm going to the outlets while we're at the beach and I'm crossing my fingers that I might be able to snag one while we're there!! Much to my dismay I got this note on the J. Crew website: We're sorry. This item has been so popular, it has sold out. We've got other great ideas--just call us 800 562 0258, we're here to help. As good as your "other great ideas" may be, I wish I could grab a Severn skirt! How fun are they:

Although an interesting look, I'd probably style my outfit a little differently!
I'm sure I could pretty easily find something sooner, but it's cool that this skirt has such a GREAT name! I'm calling it "Reverse Buyer's Remorse" (RBR for short haha!)  because I'm oh-so-disappointed that I didn't get it!! Did anyone out there grab this skirt for herself?? Anyone ever catch a bad case of RBR?

A Special Thanks to You, RAZ

So, I've never done a big reflective post, and some of you know how I started writing, but I owe it all to one very influential teacher in high school. He had us start a blog (because we were learning how print journalism is slowly fading out) with a topic that we could "write 10 posts about". If you remember and reach back into your memories of over a year ago, LBP used to be called "Preps Rock it with our Collars Popped"...too wordy to say the least, but I still blogged about basically the same thing. We were graded on the content, paragraphs, etc, etc, and this is where I started. I took a hiatus for the rest of sophomore and junior year pretty much, sorta picked it up senior year and started writing a lot second semester of senior year (essentially the LBP short history). My teacher was also a coach of mine, taught a few of my English and Journalism classes, was my advisor when I was the co-editor of our school newspaper, and played a large role in why high school was as special as it was for me. Many years ago his wife died of breast cancer and he's done a lot of work with research and treatment. Earlier this week he unveiled an iPod, iPhone, and iPad App called "Breast Cancer Treatment News".
There are a few reviews out there already and I wanted to do a bit of a throwback post to my old Journalism elective class. A special thanks goes to Caroline R. for helping me out and showing me this great app and a great opportunity to give my roots a real shoutout!

Here's one for you RAZ,  LBP wouldn't be here without you--really! Now go enjoy a nice Pepsi-Cola and celebrate!

Kappa Alpha Order, Commonwealth Birding, and Let's Be Preppy!

A few weeks ago, Brian over at Commonwealth Birding asked me if I wanted to come out to do a hunt in Richmond. Not only was I geographically unable to attend, but if you were to put this girl on a hunting trip with zero experience, I don't even know what could go wrong. I've always wanted to go clay shooting, but I could never just hop out there to go hunt quail like they do over at CB without any practice. Instead, I suggested that I do a product review and send some guy friends who go to University of Richmond in my place. Jack, a high school classmate of mine is a brother of Kappa Alpha Order, and I thought he might be interested. Jack and I are the two on the end in this picture, all of us are attending my friend Caroline's debutant ball function (I feel like this was a million years ago)...super awkward Katie.
Lucky for me, Jack and a few of his brothers were interested and after talking and exchanging number and names with Brian, the guys at CB were happy to host the KA's in my place! From the looks of all the facebook photos, it seems like they had a wonderful time!

If anyone lives in the Richmond area with a hankering to hunt quail now that the season is open (thank you email subscription to Garden & Gun Magazine for informing me of that) definitely drop Brian a line. If you just like the little quail logo, they have a bunch of apparel you can buy online. I was sent croakies and a dog collar and both will definitely be used. A few friends of mine here actually have pets that live with them, and I want to find someone who has the initials CB to give it to! It's great that they have a few products beyond just croakies and hats, especially because of hunting, because it gives CB a different market than the usual preppy brands.
I want to extend a HUGE HUGE HUGE thanks to Brian and all his co-workers for hosting Jack and the other KA brothers. I'm so glad that we were all able to work together for a great day!

Running Shoes

I'm not big on running (or working out in general...) but I used to run cross country in high school. I always enjoyed the portion of looking at everyone's fun shoes. Cross country runners tend to look for the wackiest, craziest color combos out there. I have running shoes from Asics that are BRIGHT green and turquoise with fanned out circles all over them! Here are my picks for preppy running shoes:
New Balance 574: These shoes are so classic and SO many people have them. I have a pair of my own that I got on a huge sale at finishline.com. They are SO comfortable, but they're a little heavy, so I wear mine more as knockarounds.

Asics: I'm all about Asics Gel Kayano running shoes. I'm convinced they're the best choice for running, and I've been wearing them since my sophomore year in high school. I love these pink and silver ones! Asics are definitely worth every penny you spend on them!
Mizuno: Mizuno running shoes always get great reviews as well. I've never run in these, but a lot of the swimmers I know wear these to train (coincidence?). I've only heard good things, and again I like the pink and silver combo for sure!
Nike Shox: I used to be ALL about Nike Shox. I now am 6'1'' (do I talk about that too much...? I'm starting to think so...) and don't want running shoes that add another inch. I really like the clean-ness of these shoes though. The pink is just a touch, and I've always been a fan of very white sneaks.
Nike Lunar Elite: I am a HUGE fan of these...and they're on sale! I might have to snatch up a pair to wear around as casual sneaks. The nice thing about having a big shoe size (or a very small one too) is that when shoes go on sale, the 10's and 11's and then 5's are always left!!
Saucony: I've heard very good things about Saucony shoes too. My family that all lives outside of Boston and are very into being fit and running, swear by Saucony shoes.

Nike Free Running shoes: One of my best friends from high school XC used to wear the Free Running shoes from Nike. They are one of Nike's most innovative shoes but it was always funny to see something get stuck in her shoes. The bottoms of the shoes are flexible and sometimes rocks and things can get stuck between the ridges! Since that's the actual bottom of the shoes, she was super sensitive to feeling whatever got stuck.

What do y'all wear to run in? I'm sticking to my Asics for whatever athletic endeavors I try!

What's Pink and Green and Baggy and Messy?

...Katie re-packing for college. My room's just about hit tornado status and none of my stuff is bagged yet. Last year I "organized" everything on a couch I have in my room:
I cannot believe that this was almost exactly a year ago (give or take 6 days). I cannot believe that I won't be a freshman and that there'll be 4800 brand new faces all over campus--they're the biggest freshman class ever!

Anyway, I'm packing all my stuff up today/tomorrow/through the end of the week so I'm stuck with Lilly dresses (that are soon to be hung and packed) and yucky t-shirts that sit in a box and never get worn. All the good ones are currently packed in my t-shirt tupperware box. I'm currently stuck with ill fittting Bethany Surf Shop t's, family reunion t's, concert t's (circa my sophomore year in high school Montgomery Gentry anyone...?), old high school sports t's, and even rattier gym shorts to spend my last few days in. It's not the nicest way to leave, but I'd much rather give a few days of looking messy in order to have clean, folded, organized clothes when I get back to school. Unfortunately that means wearing yucky clothes out to mostly everywhere other than work, i.e. to my last few calculus classes. They're my only real destination these days because I go M/T/Th from 6-9 and I have a 52 mile round trip to get there...ew! I have my final Thursday and then a day or two of work and then I'm USC BOUND!!! I absolutely cannot wait to see my best friends, my new apartment and get settled. YAYYY!

"The Dailies"

I've gotten a few requests and comments about the jewelry that I wear everyday. I don't wear much jewelry, but I do wear a few things each and everyday. From the top down:

I wear this exact necklace everyday. No joke, that is my exact monogram, cRa and I have the Basch Sterling Sliver Script Monogram Pendant. I wear it on a round silver snake chain that I got from a local silver jeweler. I get tons of questions on this necklace when I feature it on my Polyvore. A jeweler that eventually ended up closing its doors sold me mine, but a company called Basch are the ones who actually make the necklaces. Since all the work is custom, it takes a little bit to get to you, but for as much as I wear mine, it's so worth it. You can actually buy them on QVC.com if you search "Basch" in the box.

I got this ring for my High School graduation from my parents and I wear it everyday on my right hand ring finger. I was hesitant to wear it because I knew I'd be sick if something happened, but then again why have nice, pretty jewelry if you can't wear it! It's tough to see, but it has 4 pink sapphires around the sides. I like to have the 2 brightest ones facing out (and I actually get particular if someone takes my ring off that it gets put back the right way!)!

Everyday I also wear earrings unless my ears hurt from the last pair. I don't have sensitive ears at all, but sometimes junky earrings get me. I often wear a pair of pearl earrings or silver pearls. If they get switched out, then I wear fake diamond studs or a specific pair to match what I'm wearing (Elsa Peretti silver hearts, black pearls, etc.). One of my favorite pairs of earrings is actually from Claire's and they're pearls with teeny tiny cubic zirconias on top of the pearls. They're so tiny and delicate that people always think they're real. Very classy for Claire's, I know, kinda ridiculous!

Do you ever wear some things everyday? Got any great wedding/engagement rings to show off?! I'd love to see!!

Get My Friend on Glee!

Hi all! I've never petitioned blogworld to help me out in any kind of way, but this would be insanely cool if you could! My junior year of high school I took chorus with this girl named Maddie and now she's auditioning for Glee! She's a finalist on the local radio station in Washington DC and they recognized her as one of the top 25 submissions for the contest!! Check out her video here:

In order to vote for her, you have to go to the website: CLICK HERE! and vote for submission #17 Madeline Myers! How cool would it be to have someone that I know on TV? Congrats to Maddie for getting this far already and I can't wait to see what else is in store! I know I'm a major Gleek and now I might even know someone on the show itself! Please sign up with your email and then just say that you don't want any of the emails that they can add your email to. I'm just going to add the email address to my spam folder and keep voting! You can vote 1 time per day per email address that you enter, so keep voting! I this is an awesome project and that Maddie is great! Good luck Maddie!!

Alumni Dinner Success!

So last night was the dinner that I've been planning for about a month and a half. About 25 people showed up, so it was slightly less than I anticipated, but I was super excited that these 25 people were just as pumped to go as I was!
Fuddrucker's was so nice to all of us and I think they appreciated the business! Here are a few photos:

The Boys!

Some of the early arriving girls!

I loved all these cute reuniting moments!! Everyone caught up on schools and stories and fab things like that!!

More attendees!

All the tall girls from my graduating class--we're all 6'0'' or above! This was the best skirt photo too! I got so many compliments on it! Go forever21!

A few girls around the AWESOME cake my mom designed, check it out:

A bunch of schools that my classmates are attending!! Everyone loved this! Maroon was one of my high school's colors so we used it as the base. One local grocery store specializes in cakes and they are awesome!

Can you believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve Eve? I always feel like Eloise from Eloise and Christmastime when I say that. I love that book and the movie in New York. What a great Christmas spirit movie! I hope you all are enjoying the pre-Christmas days, and I hope you're all staying safe if you've got as much snow as I do. Avoid the roads and the malls if AT ALL possible!
