Dancin' Songs

The other day, a friend of mine asked me for some help making a playlist of well known, really good, shagging songs! He's performing at a sorority's band party and wanted to do some extra songs that would really get everyone on the dance floor. I came up with a good list, but wanted to share it, and some extras with y'all!

1. Baby (You've Got What It Takes): Michael Buble
2. Up on the Roof: The Drifters
3. Be My Baby: The Ronettes
4. One Fine Day: The Chiffons
5. Hey! Baby: Bruce Channel
6. Just Haven't Met You Yet: Michael Buble
7. Blue Moon: The Marcels
8. Let's Twist Again: Chubby Checker
9. Carolina Girls: Chairman of the Board
10. 39-21-42 Shape: The Showman
11. Runaround Sue: Dion
12. Hold Back the Night: The Trammps (a personal fave!)
13. Dance With Me: The Drifters
14. This Old Heart of Mine: The Isley Brothers

15. Carolina Lullaby: Ned Durrett
16. This Magic Moment: Ben E. King (another staple!)
17. It Will Stand: The Showman
18. Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy: The Tams
19. Love Done Gone: Billy Currington (this one is MUCH more recent than the others, but it's PERFECT for shagging!)
20. Loverboy: Billy Ocean

This is a list of a lot of my favorites to dance to--somethin' 'bout a shagging song that just always gets my toes tapping!!

Dance With Me

Ever since shag class, I've gotten really into old school dancing music. Whether it's beachy shagging music or jazzy slow dance music, I LOVE listening to it. I have a playlist on my iPod called dancing music that I just envision dancing to like in "My Best Friend's Wedding" (my favorite movie of all time):

Here's my slow dance and shagging playlist:

1. Sway by Michael Buble
2. L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole: Let's all envision the scene in "The Parent Trap" that opens the movie with Elizabeth's dress all flowy...
3. This Old Heart of Mine by The Isley Brothers
4. Wonderful Tonight by Michael Buble featuring Ivan Lins: part of this is in Italian...to die for!
5. The Twist by Chubby Checker
6. Summer Wind by Frank Sinatra
7. Dancin' in the Moonlight by Toploader
8. Baby You've Got What It Takes by Michael Buble
9. Runaround Sue by Dion
10. The Way You Look Tonight by Tony Bennett: In honor of the "My Best Friend's Wedding" scene. I know a few girls who have danced with their Daddyos to this song at their weddings and I get choked up just thinking about it.
11. For Once in My Life by Michael Buble: I'll take Scotty McCreary too for this one!
12. Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder
13. The Way You Look Tonight by Tony Bennett
14. It Will Stand by The Showmen
15. This Magic Moment by Ben King and the Drifters: this one is currently taking the cake for my entire playlist!

Got any playlist additions? Let me know!!

Summer Saturday Playlist

Summer is gearing up and I haven't made a playlist in awhile! Saturday nights during the summer are prime time to do just about anything: sit and chat on the back deck, hang out by the pool, pop in a movie and snuggle, go out, eat a delish dinner, pick crabs, I could go on forever...in that case, here goes the playlist for the beginning of my summer!

To note: I've mostly been listening to "The Drifters" station on Pandora recently. That's my playlist BUT there's no good way to track do what I've been hearing on there. I find myself thumbs-up-ing everything!

(Miracles, see #3)

1. Oh, Tonight by the Josh Abbott Band: this is just a great all around song. Love it for driving, listening to while blogging and rockin' out to. Thanks to Miss Skyler for the heads up.
2. 1,000 Faces by Randy Montana: I heard this on the new country night on my local station. 93.1 WPOC plays a lot of new country and I love hearing it! This talks about the thousands of faces of love...so sweet. Check out the music video too!
3. Miracles by Norwegian Recycling: This is from the "What's In My iPod" list from @CollegeTownLife on twitter. They featured a Memorial Day Weekend playlist and this is by FAR my favorite song on that list! It mashes up 16 songs...I had to look it up!
4. I Want Brooklyn Back by White Panda: another mashup. White Panda has an unmistakable formula...and whatever they're doing, they're doing it right. Give this baby a download and you'll rock out to it for summer. I'll never get sick of that Jackson 5 tune...toss in Jay-Z and you've got a summer JAM right there!
5. Ain't Nothin' Bout You by Taylor Swift: I featured this Brooks and Dunn cover on my facebook page a little while ago. Still love it from that B&D tribute concert that was televised awhile back!
6. Love Owes Me One by Ronnie Dunn: On that note of Brooks and Dunn, this is my favorite Ronnie Dunn solo song. It's not officially out until June 7, so check it out here on YouTube
7. Dancin' Shaggin' on the Boulevard by Alabama: My friend have to tell me to stop shagging...it's becoming an issue. #sins I'm shagging in Maryland...I'll teach you...takers?
8. Somewhere Else by Toby Keith: I love this man. I love when this man puts out new songs. Downloaded? Immediately.
9. Dirt Road Anthem by Colt Ford and Brantley Gilbert: YES, THIS IS THE REAL ONE. "Jack and Jim were a few good men..." always reminds me of the quote from Coyote Ugly too.
10. When the Sun Goes Down in Georgia by Corey Smith: Corey somehow always makes the list. This has been a feature in the past, and I still love it. Always has a little spot in my heart!
11. Pretty Good at Drinkin' Beer by Billy Currington: Nothing says summer quite like this!
12. Rain is a Good Thing by Luke Bryan: Again, I never really get sick of this song. I was browsing my Summer 2010 playlist because the CD that was in my car bit the dust. I played it too much, almost everyday, gave it to too many people to copy, and ran that guy into the ground. Miraculously though, I didn't delete the playlist...what good foresight I had!
13. Shark in the Water by VV Brown: Nothing quite says "Degrassi the Boiling Point" like this song, and I probably heard it 8,000 times last summer but it's catching on again. My sister informed me I've been singing about 20% of the lyrics wrong, so it's almost like a new song, right?
14. On the Street Where You Live by Willie Nelson: You KNEW I was gonna bring out a classic. I can't help but smile when I hear this!
15.  Coastal by Kenny Chesney: Really this song is just a stand-in for every single single on Hemingway's Whiskey. Also how can you not LOVE a CD named "Hemingway's Whiskey". Basically I love all the songs and this one is just so happy and summery! Catch a marlin, catch a tan, catch a local cover band...

Tush Push Time!

I was thinking about school and shagging and Beach Weekend (Steph and Tori, I'm not sure if you read this, but remember?! Trying to teach the boys??) the other day and remembered a very fun dance that was slightly part of all 3! This dance, called "The Tush Push" is a line dance we learned at Jillian's! It was hard to track down EXACTLY the same one we learned, but 100% this is spot on!

These guys break it down so it's easy to learn (I even feel better about my skills)! It is such a fun dance to do and you can do it to modern/pop/country songs! I love that! Adding the Tush Push to my wedding playlist is a definite! It was a fun way to get everyone up and dancing and was easy to learn since you do everything in 4 counts! Anyone else know how to do the Tush Push? I am speaking for most of the girls in my class who learned how to do it (and at least for Molly, Colleen and I) and can say that we LOVE it!

Put on those dancin' shoes now! Grab a friend and pull a "Something Borrowed Push It" moment and learn the Tush Push in a few minutes!

xxKatie

P.S.: Happy June y'all!

Weekly Gratitude

My first full week of being home is just about coming to a close. Here goes nothin':

1. Thanks to the lady who came into the store from Augusta, GA. While we knew a bunch of the same people, she left me with lasting words after I used the cliche "What a small world!". She goes, "It is a small world. That's why I've taught my children to always be respectful because you never know who's around." Amen, Augusta lady. That is sincerely a lesson and phrase I will never forget.
2. Thanks to my store for taking me back. I work with seriously the BEST people in the world and have been looking forward to coming back to our Crabby Pink Palace for months.
3. Thanks to my family for welcoming me back with open arms, open hearts, and well, an open snack drawer.
4. Thanks to all the performers who sing Beach Music. It is full of good, funny, goofy messages and a light-heartedness that connects me with South Carolina and allows me a lot of freedom while I'm home. Talk about the best of both worlds.
5. Thanks to everyone who keeps telling me junior year was their favorite. I can't wait! 21st birthdays, really knowing your way around, not getting lost (or maybe getting lost more), roadtrips to away games, football season, the Navy-USC game, everything. I absolutely can't wait.
6. RE yesterday's post, thanks Amazon Prime. I appreciate a big ol' company who's willing to look out for college students. You're awesome...we'll take any kind of deal we can get.
7. Thanks to summer for being optimal reading time. I can't wait to see how many books I can read this summer. Contest: officially on. If there's anyone who'd like to take me on in a book reading contest, let me know. We can start it easily...
8. Thanks to while I was packing to not bringing any pants back home except white jeans. While some people may look at that as silly, it's a great reminder of the FABULOUS weather that's ahead of me. Bathing suit season, hit me with your best shot!
9. Thanks to all my home hot spots for still being there. Lemongrass, CPK, Downtown, Robeks, the Amish Market, City Dock, all of them. Nothing says home like a big iced Jamaican.
10. Thanks to all my favorite blogs. You know who you are. You keep me writing, seriously.

2. Thanks to the boy who helped me with my shag final. I appreciate you putting up with me.
3. Thanks to Colleen for celebrating with me. It was extravagant, but we 150% fully deserved that celebration. I'm so thankful you took this class with me.
4. Thanks to Derek for always keeping an eye out for me in and out of shag class. Since I've known you from my freshman year first semester in college you've always been like an older brother making sure I was always ok. You're going to do great things and I look forward to hearing about you in the future and telling all my friends I knew you in college.

6. Thanks to Easter for coming late. You reinforced fashion rules. Also thank you to everyone who followed the rules and didn't wear white pants or shoes yet. I wore BOTH on Monday. #winning
7. Thanks to Capstone for having the best cheese grits on campus. You make them stringy and delicious. I miss Miss Andrena like nobody's business.
8. Thanks to everyone who sent me notes saying that they liked my post about writing thank you's. It's a been thankful circle. And I like it.
9. Thanks to my mom for signing me up for college classes over the summer. She rules and I'm lucky to have such a baller mom. Y'all should be jealous.

RAZ, Christine K., Kristen C., Harriet H., Grace R., Mom and Dad, Evalyse L., Katherine R., Caitlin S., Audrey M., Mary-Claire M., and a lot of my friends in high school. I think of y'all all the time when I have writers block thinking what RAZ's Journalism class would have told me to do. I couldn't have done this without any of your support almost 5 years ago! Woo!

Weekly Gratitude

So, LBR (let's be real) I haven't quite gotten the hang of this Weekly Gratitude. Yes, it "happens" to be weekly, but it's never on the same day. I'm really gonna try harder to stay on the ball with this!

1. My FIRST thank you to the Theta Alpha chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma at Highpoint University! A good friend of mine tweeted at me saying, "@letsbepreppy a bunch of my sisters read your blog. Today they found out we're friends. Best looks on their faces #winning". It MADE MY DAY! Thanks Sigma ladies!!!
2. Thank you to all the awesome biddies who came out to our shag debut. It was more fun than I could have asked for!
3. On that same note, thank you to the PEDU (physical education code at USC) syllabus for being done after 2 more classes. My written shag final was last night...phew it's over!
4. Thank you to my cooler for getting done. Shoutouts to Sarah C., Aly E. (for keeping me sane), and Colleen R. for all your massive amounts of help, moral support, and endless picture messages that you let me send you when I would mess up right on the line.
5. Thank you to my beach weekend house for liking my cupcakes so much. It's about as close to an ego boost that I can get!
6. Thank you to all the wonderful tour guides that I work with. This is the SINGLE BUSIEST week of being a tour guide at USC. We have 121 tours going out this week (in a typical week, we have 15-19, 3/day of the week plus some weekend tours) which is almost 2900 visitors this week alone plus the hundreds of unscheduled walk-in visitors. #admissionswin
7. Thank you to hopefully my new community college for me to take classes this summer! Please accept me!!
8. Thank you to our big, huge, end of year banquet tomorrow! I can't wait to go!! Everyone will be dressing up, looking fab, and shedding lots of tears.
9. Thank you to the collapsable boxes in my room. You will now be used to store my paints. I have a lot...
10. Thank you Edith, the sweetest lady in the lunchline, she'll always toss in something free in my lunches and I appreciate that.

Shag Debut: The Next Day

Last night we had our big "final" shag debut! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! We all had a blast strutting our stuff all around the dance floor. We danced with almost everyone in our class and even some of the people just there dancing on their own. We had such a blast and I can't believe that we've made SO MUCH progress since our first night!! This was what I wore for our big night out:

My Lilly Worth Shift is like a boost of confidence in a dress! It is my absolute favorite item in my closet so it was easily my go-to for a big night like tonight!! I was so excited to spend one of my last weekends with these folks and I think we all really had a great time! Only a few more weeks left in the school year...I can't believe it!

Country Strong

Last night I watched Country Strong with 2 girlfriends and man-oh-man is this a sad one! We thought that it was going to be a much happier movie, but my favorite part was all the music. All of the songs were great! I had downloaded part of the soundtrack beforehand (before even seeing the movie) but I have an entirely new appreciation now! My favorite song was by Chiles Stanton, better known as Leighton Meester called "A Little Bit Stronger". It's a cover of a Sara Evans song, as you can watch here:

I'm definitely a fan of the LM version! The majority of the song had movie on top of it so we mostly heard dialogue but I was still lip-synching the words along with it!

Has anyone else seen this movie? What did you think, I'd love to hear other reviews!

xxKatie

PS: Tonight is my official Shag debut to the Shag community of Columbia. Wish me and my friends luck (and preferably, lots of it...). Thanks lovelies!!

Outfit of the Day: Shagging Extras!

Last Thursday Colleen and I both went to Jillian's in the Vista for Shag night for the second time. The first time we were a little stunned and didn't know what to expect AT ALL! This time, we felt like veterans and recognized a few people from class. We knew what to wore, knew the steps in the line dance called "the tush push", and even saw a few familiar faces of the older crowd! This was what I wore this time:

I'll actually be heading back on Thursday this time too because we have our official "debut" to the shag community of USC then! I'm looking forward to it but also a little nervous! Yikes!! Wish me luck!!

I'm Going to Prom!

...Not like in high school. Not at all. I mean Disney's new movie Prom! Watch the trailer:

I will however be in full attendance for THIS prom. I will buy my ticket early, find a date (hey @SCasarella I hope you're reading), and wear a fabulous outfit. I will not be self conscious, get my hair done, wear weird looking makeup, take goofy looking pictures (actually I might....) but I will live through all of these fabulous kiddies!
I snapped this photo a few weeks ago and uploaded it to twitter noting that SC prom season was in full swing! In high school, our school newspaper highlighted all the sweet ways that the boys asked all the girls. It was A BIG DEAL, and not to toot my own horn (or the horn of my date, I guess I should say) we were featured in the paper for my prom cupcakes!

I cannot wait to see this movie and am counting down the days until April 29! Just Monday a friend of mine and I (Colleen--we were talking in shag about a certain convo a few weeks ago...) were talking about prom in high school and it reminded me of this fabulous movie! I cannot cannot cannot wait to see it!! Anyone else thinking of watching?

Weekly Gratitude

1. Thanks to this cute little dog for making me smile every time I look at it.
2. Thanks to the Carolina Cup for providing me a very much needed pick-me-up for the rest of the semester. I've been so busy with schoolwork and other stuff recently that Saturday was the perfect mini-escape from it all.
3. Thanks to my friends who like to eat dinner with me at night. All of our little chats about boys, snacks, dresses, banquets, homework, and everything else you can stuff into an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner from cici's.
4. Thanks to Wal-Mart for putting candy at such ridiculously low prices.
5. Thanks to TLC for running a Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta on Sunday morning when I couldn't move because I was so sleepy and allergy-ridden.
6. Thanks to my fabulous tutor who literally is changing my semester. From confused to little-bits-of-confidence in a class I perpetually struggle in is unbelievable.
7. Thanks to the absolute pouring rain this past week. You have done wonders for my allergies. Now that we have nice weather again, my nose is stuffy again. I took you for granted.
8. Thanks to the fabulous boy from my shag class who said hello to me on my tour. I wasn't sure you recognized me, but when you did it was so much fun! #classfriends
9. Thanks to everyone's advice via twitter. I needed to know of a tailor here to drop a hem for me on a dressy dress and within 10 minutes I got 2 responses telling me the same place! Voila!
10. Thanks to all of my readers--700 fans this week and 200 facebook fans! Wow!

xxKatie

P.S. (literally P.S. not just an added note.) 11. Thanks to the wise wisdom and advice of a friend. She handwrote me 2 letters that changed my day. Annap sCe, I owe you so much--look for your return letter soon.

Beach Music

My shagging class is full up class-ic up's and down's and Colleen (my saint of a friend who is taking class with me) and I have gotten pretty into the music. We've been to Jillian's for their shag night and it was hilarious and not a bad time. Colleen got a few photos of our "abilities":
Some of the "older" men there who we met early took us under their wings and helped us out. They were SO nice and their wives were happy to give us pointers and help us get used to it!

Clearly I felt a little silly at times but we had good attitudes and kept it light!
This was my favorite shot of the night. Colleen being dipped by our friend Derek after a complicated move called "the pretzel"!!

I'm working on a list of all the fabulous songs that I can figure out and adding a few of my own picks to shag to. We typically dance to serious motown music that doesn't always have lyrics or are still on cassette tapes. Our professor has a few a-track tapes that she carries with her, but none of the machines are able to play them anymore! Some of my favorite songs include:

1. Loverboy by Billy Ocean
This is a song we dance to EVERY class. Colleen and I joke around each class and lip sync the whole thing while partly laughing AND making fun of ourselves, but everyone around us seems to enjoy it! As much as we make fun of this song, it's totally my favorite to dance to while we're in class.

2. This Magic Moment by Ben E. King and the Drifters

We've never danced to this one, but it has the right count and would just be SO CUTE to dance to! Confession: I always think of Andre (the movie about the seal...) whenever I hear this song. I feel SO old, and still so young at the same time!

3. Stand by Me by the Drifters

Classic beach song, you can't go wrong.

4. Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy by the Tams

We got a CD a million years ago from Pier 1 believe it or not, but I still love it. And what a great message for all of us college kids!

5. Under the Boardwalk by the Drifters

If this doesn't say beach music, I don't know what does!!

I'm really enjoying the dancing that we do in class and am excited to hopefully do it soon or over the summer!!

Weekly Gratitude

Highlight of the week: Corey Smith on Sunday

This week was JAM packed with work and even a little teeny bit of play. I didn't speak to my parents for a whopping 4 days (that never happens, we speak everyday.) but I still have a lot to be thankful for:

1. A friend of mine who agreed to help tutor me. Big time.
2. One of my professors who FINALLY changed a grade from last semester. Although it took awhile, I'm still oh-so-thankful that he did it.
3. My econ professor for pushing our test to the Thursday after spring break instead of the Tuesday. We were all thankful.
4. Our shag class for being moved into a room with better A/C. Nothing says hot quite like the bottom floor of our gym's lack of A/C rooms.
5. My frog. I sleep with a stuffed frog. He didn't make it to Aruba and it was weird. He makes sleeping in my bed (away from my little fam) better.
6. Allergy medicine. Enough said. #SCpollenseemsworsethananywhereelse
7. For Glee's "Loser Like Me". Again, enough said. Y'all rock.
8. For next week to hopefully not be as difficult as this week. I really hope it's easier.
9. For polarized sunglasses. You make seeing the world so much easier. Once you go polarized, you never go back.
10. For St. Pat's yesterday. Even though I didn't participate fully in the festivities, I still had an awesome time and got to see Corey Smith. For only $12. I'm lucky. He was awesome.

Shag Update!

Tonight is my third class! Thanks for all the words of support and good luck! Class is going surprisingly well mostly because my entire class is new to shag. Very few of the class has even done it before, plus we're all pretty awkward, so there isn't much judgement or weirdness in class. I've been watching YouTube videos because we have a quiz in class, and I tend to absolutely crack under pressure when our instructors are watching. We've gone over the "basic step" as well as the "walking basic" and two types of passes already! Like I said in the beginning, we missed our first two classes, so we've gotta move fast! I've been having a great time, and even getting a workout! My friend Colleen and I had sore backs after our first class because our posture has to be a certain way every class. I also have a problem with letting the guy lead, but I'm working on it! This video has really been helping me understand the passes and footwork more:

It really is SO much fun and I can't wait to learn more! On an upcoming Thursday, we have to go to a local shag club (Jillian's here specializes in Thursday shag nights) and dance with the professionals! I've heard it is a TON of fun and my old roommate used to go to it, but now she's abroad! I'm excited to be led around by a trained dancer who isn't in our class and we get extra credit for it!

Any of my SC readers been to Jillian's? Anyone really good and have a few pointers!?

Outfit of the Day: Shagging Class Choices

This was the outfit I wore to shagging! My shirt was a little different, but the color and sleeveless style from J. Crew was spot on! My shirt had a big rosette instead of the ruffles, but you get the idea. Our room was so warm that I can't imagine ever wearing anything besides sleeveless or MAYBE a cardigan. Anyway, it was super functional and the dress "code" was a pretty big range. A few of the sorority girls came in like 80's workout gear which looked a little out of place, but their leggings and t-shirts were comfortable for our "workout" type parts of class. Boys had all kinds of clothes on, but the most popular outfit of choice was a t-shirt and khakis with legal shoes (which ended up being, for most of us, socks). I had SO much fun and I can't wait to go back! I'm really looking forward to starting some of the harder moves and one of my close friends is pretty much a shag expert who even teaches at a local Jillian's! Depending on the weather and other variables Monday, I'll probably end up in a similar outfit!

Shagging Shoe Shopping

Today at 6:15, I have my first shagging dance class. (Read: I'm very very nervous). I've posted about shagging before, but decided to bite the bullet and enroll in a class. I figured it would be fun to take a random class with no one I knew and put my best foot forward. Low and behold, a know very many people in class (which I think is good and bad) and one of my best friends, Colleen, signed up for my moral support (I'm still thankful...). For anyone who's not entirely familiar with shagging, here's a good video to watch:

My professor is pretty strict about what kinds of shoes we can wear to class and sent us (5) an email about all the kinds of shoes we couldn't wear. They had to be closed toe, no black bottoms, no sneakers, no streak-leaving, no sandals, no heels, that were comfortable enough to dance in. What was I left with? Nothing. She said boat shoes were acceptable, but this girl doesn't own any...can you believe that? In an effort to go shagging shoe shopping--say that five times fast--Colleen and I hurried over to the mall yesterday morning. I was lucky enough to find two pairs of boat shoes (a preppy pink and green pair and a standard brown pair that would match anything) and they were included on a BOGO sale!
I used to have two pairs of Sperrys, but one was the wrong size (there's a HUGE difference between a 9.5 and a 10!) and the other was a pink leather traditional boat shoe that gave me horrible blisters (also a 9.5!) and now I have two pairs that I can rely on. I'm really looking forward to having both pairs because they're so functional plus I can pop them on with shorts or in place of Jack Rogers with some outfits! I definitely needed a pair of these for a few years!

So here goes nothing...I haven't taken a dance class in YEARS! The last formal dance class I took was Irish dancing and this is certainly a departure, but how can you graduate from a Southern school and not know how to properly shag?! You just can't! Even my dad knows how, so here goes quite the class. Hopefully I won't be as nervous once 6:00 rolls around!

xxKatie
